Brown Rice

Brown Rice
  • 1 cup dry, uncooked brown rice
  • 6 cups water
  1. Use 6 cups of water for every 1 cup dry uncooked rice. Combine water and rice in a large saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover and simmer until rice is tender, about 60 minutes. Drain and serve.
Traditional recipes call for 2 cups water to 1 cup rice and do not drain the rice; however due to concerns of arsenic in rice-field soil, using extra water and draining is recommended.

California rice does not have the same concerns over arsenic as rice grown in the southeastern United States or in China, so if using rice from a known source in California, the 1:2 rice to water ratio is acceptable. Larger amounts can be made ahead of time and stored in your refrigerator.
